Giang Chau’s daughter: ‘My father no longer desires the title of People’s Artist’

Ho Chi Minh City Department of Culture and Sports recently said it would propose to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to specifically award the title of People’s Artist to three names: artists Minh Vuong, Thanh Tuan and Giang Chau.

Artist Giang Chau has brain degeneration – complications from a stroke in 2017. One time he was driving on the street, he had a stroke, fell, and an acquaintance discovered him and took him to the emergency room.

Ms. Thao said that over the years, her father realized that the approval process still had many shortcomings, making many veteran artists sad.

A few years ago, when she was awarded Meritorious Artist, Giang Chau decided not to apply because she believed that the title was not something to ask for.

`My father always thought, if you think artists are worthy, you should give it to them, instead of making an application to call for honor, which would be too strange,` Ms. Thao said.

Before his stroke, artist Giang Chau still performed, although there weren’t as many shows as when he was at his peak.

In early July, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism announced a list of 77 dossiers eligible for approval for the title of People’s Artist and Meritorious Artist.

In response to the proposal of the Department of Culture and Sports of Ho Chi Minh City on special consideration for the title of People’s Artist,  Culture Minister Nguyen Ngoc Thien said he would present to the Prime Minister a number of cases.

Artist Giang Chau, real name Tran Ngoc Chau, was born in 1952. In 1968, he joined the opera troupe Huong Mua Thu and was assigned important roles.

People’s Artist is the highest title awarded by the State to individuals working in the field of culture and art.
