The Sukhoi Design Bureau began the process of upgrading the Su-24 fighter aircraft in the early 1970s, after which a pilot project to equip the Su-24 with aerial refueling capabilities began to be developed in the early 1970s.

Depending on each mission, speed and load, the effective operating range of the Su-24M ranges from 600-1,200 km.

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) named Russia’s Su-24 `swordsman`, derived from the sharp, sword-like nose of this aircraft model.

Considered a legendary aircraft model of the former Soviet Union and today’s Russia, the Su-24 has participated in many wars around the world such as the Afghan war, the Desert Storm campaign, the Chechen conflict or the civil war.

Russia is currently deploying 11 Su-24M/M2 aircraft at Hmeymim air base, serving anti-terrorism campaigns in Syria.
