According to newspaper Nikkei (Japan), Vietnamese companies, including new names in the industry, plan to launch or expand smartphone production, challenging foreign manufacturers, especially Samsung

Vingroup announced the establishment of VinSmart last June 12 with a charter capital of 3,000 billion VND (131 million USD) to enter the smartphone market.

Both companies leverage technology from original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to keep up with the rapidly evolving market.

First, VinSmart will enter the market with affordable products, similar to the strategy in the auto industry.

Vingroup has partnered with an overseas smartphone manufacturer in an effort to create a low-priced yet profitable smartphone model.

Asanzo, a company that mainly produces TVs, will spend 200 billion VND (8.73 million USD) to boost smartphone production this year.

Asanzo is considering launching a low-cost phone, around one million VND with basic features, said company Chairman Pham Van Tam.

Asanzo achieved revenue of VND 4,620 billion in 2017 and about 90% of that came from TV.

Bkav, a leading security company in Vietnam, brought the first `Made in Vietnam` smartphone to this market since 2015 with the product Bphone.

The smartphone market in Vietnam has grown rapidly at an annual rate of about 10%, revenue in 2017 more than doubled compared to 2014, reaching over 15 million products.

The smartphone market in Vietnam has expanded rapidly in recent years and it is estimated that there are about 30 – 40 million products in use.

Samsung, a company with a smartphone factory located in Vietnam, holds 46.5% of the domestic market share.

Vietnamese companies can produce smartphones thanks to Samsung’s presence.

Cheap smartphones are just a niche market in Vietnam, with low demand.
