The work of French director Justin Triet opens with an interview of female student Zóe Solidor (Camille Rutherford) with German writer Sandra Voyter (Sandra Hüller).

Behind Sandra’s journey of vindication in court is the hidden corner of the intellectual couple’s marriage.

The director uses the details of the trial to explore the personalities of the couple.

The climax of the film occurs when the judge releases the recording of Sandra and Samuel’s last conversation, the day before the accident.

Director Justine Triet used the trial as a metaphor for the marital life on the brink of collapse of character Sandra Voyter (left).

This segment shows the director’s stagecraft.

The work evokes many social issues, such as gender equality, justice for everyone, artistic creativity and economic conditions, and conflicts between beliefs and choices.

Was Sandra’s friendliness with Zoe really flirtatious?

Sandra Hüller’s transformation is the highlight of the work.

Hüller showed diverse expressions, from tired eyes because of the case to affection for his co-star.

Child actor Milo Machado Graner – the role of Daniel – has a place to act at the end of the film.

The director does not abuse music, only uses a few wordless works, mostly dialogue sounds.

At the 2023 Cannes Film Festival at the end of May, the work received a five-minute round of applause and was praised by critics.

On Rotten Tomatoes, critic Neal Pollack said: `A hyper-realistic French legal drama, at the same time a profound discourse on marital breakdown. Attractive and beautifully acted.`

Justin Triet is the third female director to win the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, after Jane Campion (The Piano, 1993) and Julia Ducournau with the film Titane in 2021. In her acceptance speech, the French filmmaker caused a stir.

In September, some viewers thought that Justin Triet was being `punished` when Anatomy of a Fall gave way to The Pot Au Feu – directed by Tran Anh Hung – competing for the Best International Film Oscar 2024 category.
